THE BAY CIRCUIT ALLIANCE: Since its founding in 1990 the Bay Circuit Alliance (BCA) has served the catalyst to make the Bay Circuit dream come true. A total of 180 miles of multi-use, passive recreational
trail have now been dedicated, thanks to the contributions of hundreds of volunteers in more than 32
cooperating towns. The Alliance is best described as a partnership of organizations and individuals, public and
private, working to complete the Bay Circuit Trail and Greenway. BCA's membership consists of six regional,
four statewide, and more than 30 local member organizations plus many interested individuals. BCA helps
local communities establish their portion of the Bay Circuit Trail through planning and technical assistance route identification, land protection issues, and trail management and construction. BCA also maintains
contact with state and federal government representatives and agencies to promote the Bay Circuit concept
and consult on corridor-wide, trail-related issues.

THE BAY CIRCUIT GREENWAY: The Bay Circuit was first proposed in 1929 as an "outer emerald
necklace", a greenbelt providing open space to Boston's expanding population. Over the years, additional
public and private parks and reservations were established in the area between what is now Route 128 and
Interstate 495, but they failed to keep pace with commercial and residential development. The Bay Circuit
Trail, while intended to provide recreation to its users, also seeks to improve the balance between open space
by adding more "pearls" to the "emerald necklace". Since its inception BCA has helped expand the greenway
by more than 4000 acres. Outstanding examples include: Prospect Hill in Rowley; the Haynes Property in
Boxford; Camp Acton in Acton; White Farm in Sudbury; the Greenways Conservation Area in Wayland; the
Mill Pond property in Ashland; the Wittenborg Property in Framingham; Adams Farm in Walpole; the Silver
Lake Sanctuary, Hathaway and Cranberry Watershed Reservations in Kingston; the Tubbs Meadow
Reservation in Pembroke; the state's largest cranberry bog property in Hanson and Halifax.
